Hold on there! No Costa Ricans yet. But we're working on it.

Costa Rica's Conservatorio de Castella.

One of Costa Rica’s most important institutions, the Conservatorio de Castella
, has been in existence for a little over sixty years. In 1953, founder Arnoldo Herrera (1923-96) said, “This school that we are creating will be the breeding ground for the future great artists of this country.” And by great artists, he was referring not only to musicians, but also to all types of artists, as this is a conservatory where in addition to music, plastic arts, dance and theater are taught as well. When asked in a recent interview about the state of music education in Costa Rica, current director Julio Cordero thought that his country could benefit by adopting the methods that are being in used in Venezuela, in order to combat what he described as “the low level of culture and music in general.” However, he also affirmed his support of the multi-disciplinary nature of the Conservatory, and added that happily, Herrera had had the vision to provide the institution with a theater that was designed to accommodate not just music, but all of the arts.
